Jan de Bruyn was born in Abcoude, Netherlands in 1918. He obtained his B.A. from UBC (1949) and M.A. in English from the University of London (1951). He joined UBC's Department of English as a lecturer and remained there until his retirement in 1983. De Bruyn was founding editor of Prism and edited the departmental newsletter, The Newsense. Born in London, England, Roy Daniells emigrated to Victoria, B.C. with his family in 1910. He received a B.A. from University of British Columbia (1930) before continuing his graduate education in English at the University of Toronto (M.A., 1931 and Ph.D., 1936). Born in Calgary, Alberta, Earle Birney (1904-1995) was educated at Universities of British Columbia, Toronto and California. He lectured in English at the University of Toronto from 1936 to 1941 when he left to serve overseas in World War II. On return, he worked for the CBC in 1945 and in 1946 he joined the Department of English at University of British Columbia, later transferring to the division of Creative Writing.
